Suprabhatham

|| 1 ||

“kausalya supraja rama!purva sandhya pravartate, uthishta! narasardula! kartavyam daivam ahnikam ”

Sri Rama! Kausalya’s endearing son! Wake up, dear! You have to do your day-to-day duties do wake up please.

|| 2 ||
“uthishtothishta! govinda! uthishta garudadhvaja! uthishta kamalakantha! thrilokyam mangalam kuru ”

O Govinda, wake up! O Garudadhvaja! Wake up. O Kamalakanta (i.e., the husband of Kamala)! All the three worlds are under your rule, they have to prosper, Wake up, my child.

” matas samsastajagatam : madhukaitabhareh vakshoviharini ! manohara-divyamurte : sri swamini srithajana priya danaseele ! sri Venkatesadayithe thava suprabhatham ”

May it be an auspicious dawn (morning) to Thee, O Lakshmi, the Mother of the Worlds, the ever dweller on the chest of Vishnu (i.e., the enemy of the demons, madhu and Kaitabha), of attractive and divine form, the Mistress and of the nature of granting the desired objects of those seeking refuge!

“thava suprabhatham aravindalochane ! bhavathu prasanna mukhachandra mandale vidhisankarendra vanithabhirarchithe ! vrishasaila nathadavithel dayanidhe ”

May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee, O Lakshmi of the eyes like the lotus, of a bright face like the Moon, worshipped by the wives of Brahma, Shankara and Indra and a treasure of compassion. You have an endearing attachment to your devotees.

“athriyadhi saptharushays samupasya sandhyam aakasa sindhu kamalani manoharani aadaya padhayuga marchayithum prapanna: seshadrisekhara vibho! thava suprabhatham”

Having worshipped the morning twilight (i.e., having said the morning prayer, namely, the sandhyavandana) the seven sages like Arti, bringing the beautiful lotuses from the Divine Ganges, have arrived to worship Thy feet. Lord of Seshachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee?

” panchananabja bhava shanmukha vasavadhya: tryvikramadhi charitham vibhudhasthuvanthi bhashapathipatathi vasara shuddhi marath seshadri-sekhara-vibho! thava subrabhatham ”

Aran, Aryan, Shanmuga and Devas are all-anxious to adore you. The daily Panchangam is to be read and approved by you. Get up, Srinivasa, dear.

” Eeshathprapulla saraseeruha narikela phugadrumadi sumanohara Balikanam aavaathi mandamanilassaha divya gandhai: seshadri-shekhara-vibho! thava suprabhatham”

The breeze, carrying the wonderful fragrance of the partly opened lotuses and the beautiful ears of the trees like the Areca and Coconut, is gently blowing. Lord of Seshachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee.

“unmilya nethrayugam uttama-panjarasthaa : Paathraa vasishta kadhaleephala payasani bhukthvaa saleelamatha keli sukha: patanthi Seshadri-sekhara-vibho! thava suprabhatham ”

The parrots, kept for pleasure in the foremost cages, opening their eyes, are graciously singing, after eating the remains of the plantain fruits and the payasam in the vessels. Lord Seshachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee?

” thanthreeprakarshamadhuraswanaya vipanchyaa gayathyanantha charitham thava naradopi Bhashasamagrama sakruthkara sara rammyam seshadri-sekhara-vibho! thava suprabhatham ”

Thumburu Narada is speeding up to you. His Veena is set to sing your glory. Do hear these melodious songs of Narada.

“brungavaleecha makaranda rashanuvidda jhankara geetha ninadaissa sevanaya niryathyupaantha sarasee kamalodarebhyaha seshadri-sekhara-vibho! thava suprabhatham”

Lotus hidden bees, having come out in the open with the opening of the petals, are singing solemn hymns. Oh Srinivasa! You are omnipotent.

“yosha ganena varadhadni vimathyamaane ghoshalayeshu dhadhimanthana theevraghoshaaha Roshaathkalim vidha-dhathe kakubhascha kumbhaha seshadri-sekhara-vibho! thava suprabhatham”

Ayarpadi, ladies are singing their sweet melodies as they are churning butter. They announce the day-dawn. Get up, oh Govinda! Bless these endearing Gopis.

“padmeshamithra sathapathra kathalivargha Harthum shriyam kuvalayasya nijanga Lakshmya Bheree ninadamiva bibrathi theevranadam seshadri-sekhara-vibho! thava suprabhatham ”

The humming black bees seem to sing that they are far more attractive than the black ‘Kuvali’ flowers from which they draw honey. All the three of you namely, bees, flowers and Your Holy Self form a holy Trinity in color and splendor.

“srimannabheeshta varadhakhila lookabandho sri srinivasa jagadekadayaika sindho sri devathagruha bhujanthara divyamurthe sri Venkatachalapathe! thava suprabhatham ”

You have changed your abode from Heaven to Venkatam to give boons to your devotees. Do hurry up! Venkatesha, bless them.

“sri swamy pushkarinikaplava nirmalangaa sreyorthino hara viranchi sanadadhyaha dware vasanthi varavethra hathothamangaha: Sri Venkatachalapathel ! thava suprabhatham”

Aryan, Aran and Celestials, after taking bath in Swami Pushkarini, are awaiting Your Grace to receive blessings.

“sri seshasaila garudachala venkatadri narayanadri vrishabhadri vrishadri mukhyam akhyam thvadeeyavasatheranisam vadanthi sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham”

Lord of Venkatachala! Thy abode is always called by several names, as Sri Seshasaila, Garudachala, Venkatadri, Narayanadri, Vrsabhadri, Vrsadri. May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee?

“sevaparah shiva-suresa krusanudharma rakshombhunatha pavamana dhanadhi nathaha: bhaddanjali pravilasannija sirsha desaha: sri venkatachalapathe! thava suprabhatham”

Siva, Indra, Agni, Yama, Nairuti, Varuna, Vayu and Kubera, with folded hands on their heads, are desirous of offering service to thee. Lord of Venkatachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee?

“dhatishu te vihagaraja mrugadhiraja nagadhiraja gajaraja hayadhiraja : swaswadhikara mahimadhika marthayanthe sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham”

Garuda, lion, Anata, Gaja, Ashwa, all these five are awaiting Your Command to improve their way of doing things to serve you better and more effectively.

“suryendubhouma bhudhavakpathi kavya suri swarbhanukethu divishathparishathpradanaa: twaddhasa dasa charamavadhidaasa daasa: sri venkatachalapathe! thava suprabhatham”

The main (deities) of the Assembly of Gods – the nine planets (Sun, Moon, Mars (Angarakha), Mercury (Buddha), Jupiter (Bruhaspati), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Rahu and Ketu) remain happy to be the servants of the last grade servants of the servants of Thy servants (i.e. They remain most obedient to Thee).

“thwathpadadhulibharita spurithothha manga :swargapavarga nirapeksha nijantharanga: kalpagamakalanaya kulatham labhanthe sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham”

Surya and the rest of the Navagrahas are steadfast in their dutiful obeisance to your devotees. They await Your Command to serve you through your devotees.

“thvadgopuragra sikharani nirikshmana swargapavarga padavim paramam shrayantha:marthyaa manushyabhuvane mathimashrayanthe sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham”

Srinivasa! Mankind desires to be with you forever and forever in Venkatam and to serve you life-long.

“sri bhuminayaka dayadhi gunamrtabdhe devadhideva ! jagadeka saranya murthe srimann-ananta-garudadibhir arcitanghre! sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham”

Lord of Sridevi and Bhudevi! The ocean of nectar of compassion and other virtues! The chief of Gods! The sole refuge of the Universe! The possessor of Sri (i.e., wealth)! One whose feet are worshipped by Ananta and Garuda!

“sri padmanabha purushothama vasudeva vaikuntha madhava janardana chakrapane sri vathsachinha saranagatha parijatha sri venkatachalapathe! thava suprabhatham ”

Bakthas are chanting your names as Vasudeva, Madhava, Govinda, Janardhana, Chakrapani and other endearing names. Devotees are ever ready to obey Your Command.

” kandarpa darpa hara sundara divya murthe kanthaa kuchamburuha kutmialola drishte kalyana nirmala gunakara divyakeerthe sri venkatachalapathe! thava suprabhatham ”

Your beauty enchants Sri Lakshmi. She would not leave her Lord. For the sake of Bakthas get up please and afford them Dharshan.

” minakruthe kamatakola nrusimha varnin swamin parashvatha thapodana ramachandra seshamsharama yadhunandana kalki roopa sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham ”

Thy descent from Paramapada was heralded in Thy numerous avatars when you did immense good to your devotees. Great God, do come to us to help us in our distress.

” ela lavanga ghanasaara sugandhi thirtham divyamviyathsarithi hemaghateshu purnam drutwadhya vaidika sikhamanaya: prahrushta: thishtanthi venkatapathe ! thava suprabhatham ”

The Brahmins, well versed in the Vedas, are now joyfully waiting (for worshipping you), carrying the golden pots filled with the water of the Divine Ganges (AkashGanga) which (waters) are rendered fragrant by (mixing of) the cardamoms, cloves and camphor. Lord of Venkatachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee?

” bhaswanudethi vikachani saroruhani sampoorayanthi ninadai : kakubho vihangha: sri vaishnavassathatha marthitha mangalasthe dhamasrayanthi thava venkata ! subrabhatham ”

The twittering of birds on all sides proclaims the dawn of the day. Devotees are gathered in numbers and they sing their vociferous adoration to you.

” bhramadayas suravaras samaharshayastthe santhassa nandana mukhastvatha yogivarya: dhamanthike thavahi mangala vasthu hastha: sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham ”

The Chief of Gods like Brahma, the great sages and the good Yogins as Sanandana are (waiting) at Thy abode, holding auspicious things in their hands. Lord of Venkatachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee.

” lakshminivasa niravadya gunaika sindo : samsarasagara samuththaranaika setho vedanta vedya nijavaibhava bhakta bhogya sri venkatachalapathe ! thava suprabhatham ”

Abode of Lakshmi! Ocean of faultless (and auspicious) virtues! Bridge to cross the ocean of transmigration (samsara)! One whose glory is known through the Upanishads! One enjoyed by the devotees! Lord of Venkatachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee.

Sri Sapthagiri-vasa! You’re descent from Paramapadam. You are our leader and preceptor. Sri Padmavati, Your heavenly spouse is our endearing refuge.

” sachadhurmukha shanmukha panchamukha pram ukakhila daivatha mouli mane saranagatha vathsala saranidhe paripalayamam vrishasailapathe ”
Superb Siva and ardent Ayan do adore you. Mortal man appeals to you to dissipate his distress.

” athivelathaya thava durvishahai ranuvela kruthairaparada sathai : paritham thvaritham vrishasailapathe paraya krupaya paripahi hare ”
Many a fault have I committed. I am confident You will extend Your grace to enable me to wade through this mire of misery.

” adhivenkata saila mudaramather janathabimathadhika danarathath paradevathaya gathithannigamai: kamaladayithtanna param kalaye ”
Sri Lakshmi’s Lord! Upanishads adore you. There is none greater than you.

” kalavenuravavasa gopa vadhu sathakoti vrithath smarakoti samath prathivalla vikabhimathath sukhadhath vasudeva suthanna paramkalaye ”
Sri Venkatesha! You are Lord Krishna Himself. The melody of your flute enchants Gopis. Your beauty is unassailable. You are brighter than brightness itself.

Who is the protector of the world,
Who wears shining garland on his neck,
Who has a forehead like autumn moon,

Sadambhodhi vasam galathpushpahasam,
Jagatsannivasam sathadhithyabhasam,

I worship and worship him,
Who always lives in the sea,
Who has a smile like a flower,
Who lives everywhere in the world,
Who has the sparkle of hundred suns,

And who has a sweet face adorned with smile.

Ramakantaharam sruthivrathasaram,
Jalantharviharam dharabharaharam,
Chidanandaroopam manogna swaroopam,
Druthaneka roopam Bajeham Bajeham., 3

I worship and worship him,
Who is the garland in the neck of Lakshmi,
Who is the essence of Vedas, Who lives inside water,
Who lightens the weight of earth,
Who has a form which is eternally pleasing,
Who has a form which attracts the mind,
And who has assumed several forms.

Jarajanma Heenam parananda peetham,
Samadana leenam sadaivanaveetham,
Jagajjanma hethum suraneeka kethum,
Trilokaika sethum Bajeham Bajeham., 4

I worship and worship him,
Who does not have birth or aging,
Who is full of eternal happiness,
Who is always interested in peace,
Who does not have anything new,
Who is the cause of birth of this world,
Who is the protector of the deva army,
And who is the bridge between the three worlds.

Kruthamnayaganam khagadhisayanam,
Vimukthernidhanam hararadhimanam,
Swabakthanukoolam jagadvrukshamoolam,
Nirastharthasoolam Bajeham Bajeham., 5

I worship and worship him,
Who is the singer of the Vedas,
Who rides on the king of birds,
Who is the cause of salvation,
Who kills enemies of Lord Shiva,
Who is very partial to his devotees,
Who is the root of the tree of the world,
And is the exterminator of all sorrows.

Samasthamaresam dwirephabha klesam,
Jagat bimba lesam hrudakasa desam,
Sada divya deham vimukthakhileham,
Suvaikuntageham Bajeham Bajeham., 6

I worship and worship him,
Who is the lord of all devas,
Who has a pretty hair frequented by bees,
Who has this earth as a part of him,
Who has a body as clear as the sky,
Who always has a holy mien,
Who has no attachments to this world,
And has Vaikunta as his home.

Suralibalishtam Trilokivarishtam,
Gurannangarishtam swaroopaikanishtam,
Sadyudhadheeram mahaveeraveeram,
Bhambhoditheeram Bajeham Bajeham., 7

I worship and worship him,
Who is the strongest among devas,
Who is the greatest among the three worlds,
Who is the heaviest among heavy people,
Who is always heroic in battles,
Who is the great hero of heroes,
And takes you across the sea of life.

Ramavamabhagam thalanagna nagam,
Kruthadeethayagam gatharagaragam,
Muneendrai sugeetham surai sapareeham,
Ganougairaathetham Bajeham Bajeham., 8

I worship and worship him,
Who keeps Lakshmi on his left side,
Who can be approached by Yagas,
Who is not interested in anything,
Who carried the Govardhana Mountain,
Who is pure music to great sages,
Who is served by Devas,
And who is above all beings.

Phalasruthi

Idham yasthu nithyam samadhaya chitham,
Padeth ashtakam kashta haram murare,
Savishnor vishokam druvam yathilokam,
Jarajanmasokam punar vidathe no.

The one who reads with peace,
This octet on Hari,
Which is the destroyer of sorrow,
Would definitely reach the world of Vishnu,
Which is always without sorrow,
And he would never undergo sorrow ever.
